If your broker or advisor doesn't offer true discount commissions, only recommends load mutual funds, high cost annuities or managed accounts that charge an excessive fee of 1% to 2% or more on the entire value of the account every year you may be paying way to much for questionable advice.  If their investment strategy is simply to buy and hold on for the long term regardless of any negative changes in your investments then they are just sales people more interested in collecting up-front commissions and on-going fees than actually helping you manage your portfolio.
